About Me

Matthew Ryan
Matthew Ryan is the pen name of a 25 year-old freelance writer, independent journalist, graduate student and journalism instructor embedded in Urbana, Ill.

The horseshoe is the name of an infamously gluttonous and highly localized culinary delicacy borne in his hometown. In essence, it is an open-faced hamburger sandwich. It starts off with a slice of white toast on the ground floor, with a single hamburger patty on top. On top of that is a liberal application of fries, and the final touch is a slathering of cheddar cheese sauce. Some variations use chicken patties in lieu of hamburger, and cheese sauces of a spicier variety.

In blog form, the idea is to create a rich literary experience encompassing obscure corners of the Midwestern culture. A little bit of this, a little bit of that, one thing piled on another.

He can be reached directly at mschroyer@gmail.com

His other blog, The Mental Munition Factory, takes a critical look at how mass communication affects a democratic society, through examining current events in the media.
